Advanced Topics In Sendmail covers many topics of special interest for corporate, ISP, government and educational mail administrators.

Optimizing sendmail performance for:

  • SMTP relays
  • mailing lists
  • mailbox servers
The focus is on understanding performance issues specific to sendmail and how to use sendmail performance features to maximize hardware resources.

Managing multiple sendmail servers using LDAP

  • Configuring sendmail to access databases and class files in an LDAP directory
  • How to set-up and maintain an LDAP server using OpenLDAP
  • Verifying LDAP operation and LDAP trouble-shooting

Managing spam and viruses using sendmail

Using the built-in tools such as:
  • The check_* rulesets
  • The access database
  • Open relay checking
Using sendmail's new Mail fILTER (MILTER) API:
  • How MILTER works
  • How to configure MILTER
  • The MILTER based MIMEDefang program to reject viruses
  • The MILTER based SpamAssassin to reject spam
The class is lecture-based class with in-class demonstrations.

"Advanced Topics In Sendmail" is taught as a three day class.

Class Requirements:

The class is oriented towards intermediate and advanced sendmail administrators. Experience managing and configuring sendmail is expected. It is assumed that the student understands general sendmail configuration including macros, classes, options and the use of M4 to generate configuration files. It is also assumed that the student can understand and write simple sendmail rules, but it is not required. If the student does not know how to write rules, then some parts of the classes will have to be accepted as boiler plates.
